Stephen has been a trooper and is still playing the game 24 weeks in, quite the endeavour, Sam has fallen off the wagon ever since being given her Wild Card of Tim by The Replacements (not great) and as such the blogging has taken a slide. However Sam should be joining us for the final 25 push and has helped me to put together my list of microreviews, enjoy!
Billy Joel - The Stranger
6/10 - sounds a lot like Elton John and I didn't like that much either! Best track: The Stranger (before it kicks in).
Sam - this track is just so awful that there is no way in the world that I can bring myself to listen to this!!
(Wildcard here - Stephen chose to play his Wildcard instead of listening to Purple Rain by Prince, and Sam chose Dr John...)
Dr John - Gris Gris
9/10 - Utterly amazing album, I love the voodoo sounds "Je suis le grande zombie..".. just listen to it. Best track: I Walk on Gilded Splinters.
Sam - This is just completely awesome, New Orleans is so cool, I wanna go!
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
7/10 - Hoping for a bit more here, i much prefer listening to Crazy Horse and Neil Young but still fairly solid. Best track: Southern Man (obviously..)
Sam - I do quite like it, it's not my normal choice because I don't especially like his voice...
Otis Redding - Otis Blue
8/10 - Didn't disappoint, consistantly good! Best track: Satisfaction
Sam - I do love this album, and covers of Satisfaction are always good in my book (see also: Devo)
Phil Spector - Back in Mono
8/10 - Another soul collection, I can't help but fall for the Wall of Sound effect. Best track: Da Doo Ron Ron
Sam - this stuff reminds me of the things I used to like when I was little and didn't understand what a travesty Jive Bunny was. I liked the old songs on it and didn't realise that they'd been cut into near oblivion. Now I still love the old songs. We also spent all Christmas listening to A Christmas Gift For You, just brilliant.
Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction
6/10 - It's not me, metal is just rubbish... Best track: Sweet Child 'o Mine.
Sam - no, no please, take it away.
Sly and The Family Stone - Greatest Hits
6/10 - Why a greatest hits album? the mad folk at rolling stone eh? - Best track: Dance to the music
Sam - ok in small doses maybe?
Ray Charles - Collection
7/10 - Really good, nice to be back on the good stuff after the last few. Best track: I Got a Woman
Sam - now I've heard this track properly I can't believe I haven't listened to this sooner, wicked.
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over Troubled Water
7/10 - Reminds me of worthers original and being stuck in the back of the car after long car journeys. Best track : The Boxer
Sam - no, Paul, I love you. But loose the tall guy.
Little Richard - Heres little richard
9/10 - Can't help but smile whenever I hear little richards howl. Best track: Lucille!
Sam - Don't need to listen to this to know I love it. Favourite Little Richard track though is erm Slippin' and Slidin', no wait, Keep a Knockin', no hang on, Good Golly Miss Molly.... ok ok.
Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East
6/10 - Bit too endulgent for my liking, bit like being on a roundabout and not being able to get off. Best track: Statesbrough Blues
Sam - erm.
Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back
8/10 - Yeah Boy...! Best track: Don't belive the hype
Sam - Bring it on :) Yeeeeeah Boi!
John Coultrane - A Love Supreme
7/10 - Good but I don't feel like I've even touched the surface - Best track: it's hard to say.. its not one you pick a track from.. A Love Supreme Part 1 if pushed.
Sam - Smooth, like a New York skyline in black and white. I like. But it seems almost impenetrable.
Thats it for now!
